The Praying Masterpiece

By: Danieka Thompson

Masterpieces are made from a series of failures or disappointments that finally breakthrough to create success. I learnt this at an early age when I would try my best to be on the same level as the supposedly ‘bright children’ in my class.

In grade one; my teacher would have two sides on the blackboard – ‘A’ and ‘B.’ I was on the ‘B’ side, where my teacher would give the easier work because we were the ‘not so bright’ students.

I would sit in class all day and get my work marked with correct answers. Sadly, no matter what, my work was never good enough for the ‘A’ side. My teacher even said it to me. Can you believe it?

From a young age, I felt like I was not academically good at what I did. Nevertheless, I knew God blessed me with a brain to achieve great things.

Fast forward to the sixth grade, I had a different teacher at a different school. One day, I carried a newspaper to school with my father’s face on the front page to show my teacher. My teacher saw it and said, “Then Danieka a yuh father this? And yuh dunce so.”

That’s when I knew that words are like stones; they hit hard. Whenever I look back at how those moments made me feel, it pushes me to continue making progress. I’m now in university, and sometimes it gets challenging. However, when I consider my journey and how God has been faithful to me, I have to praise Him.

 Words of Encouragement

In my room, I have a diagram with positive words inside what looks like a building block. It reminds me of Ephesians 2:10 that say, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

Though others may not believe in me, God’s word assures me in Philippians 4:13 that, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” A bible quote each morning helps me to build myself and my faith in God. My personal time with God helps to determine what kind of mood I might have throughout the day.

The world can be a dark place at times; but, not giving in to your challenges and trusting God to uphold you is how you become a masterpiece. Growing away from negative things doesn’t happen overnight, and neither does strengthening your faith in Jesus.

You may not have experienced such negativity when you were younger, but you may be experiencing it now at university. So, I just want to encourage you to look to God for help. He made you with value, and you can overcome.

Prayer fixes everything! My prayers have made me into the masterpiece that God created me to be. Trust God; and when you’re praying, put some Faith-In-It
